Ethnobiology: This creature is called a sea cucumber because its body is similar in shape and size to the vegetable, cucumber. Sea cucumbers are related to sea urchins, and this largest local species has rough, reddish-brown or orangish-brown skin. Sea cucumbers may sometimes be found stranded after the tide drops. They have five strips of white muscles that run the length of their body and may be eaten.
